Of Adirondack Plein Air

Of Adirondack Plein Air

I paint in pastel en plein air. Painting in the air sharpens my focus and clears out clutter in my head. The essence of plein air work is decision making, commitment and honesty about what is happening right in front of me. Studio work draws from the plein air experience by referring to light, color, shape and composition.

Living in the Adirondack landscape, the choice of composition seems endless. One could fall out of their car on the side of the road and find something to paint. Most of the time I find myself focused on the more up close and personal views that don't always speak to mountains and lakes and forests. I prefer the concept of - What was that I saw out of the corner of my eye? - the more intimate evaluation of a scene.

The Nature of Snow

The Nature of Snow

It began with the drawings of the snow in early 2025. The winter was full of snow and windy so the snow piled and swirled and built fabulous sensual shapes. An ephemeral proposition, the drifts where plowed down every day as they were on the driveway of my neighbor. And returned overnight in new shapes. This winter has been freeze, thaw, snow. Very little wind sculpting. The work reflects Winters artistic notions.

Bay of Fundy, Nova Scotia

Bay of Fundy, Nova Scotia

I’ve spent time in Nova Scotia. The landscape is primeval, speaks of Gia, and the monstrous power of tides.

Landscapes Near and Far

Landscapes Near and Far

This collection of works includes views of some of my favorite places. Many works are done en plein air. I have worked when it was snowing. But honestly I prefer my studio when the snow is coming down. My medium behaves better under studio conditions.

Taking Notice - Barnscapes

Taking Notice - Barnscapes

“Taking Notice” a series of barnscapes along a six mile stretch of Route 86, explores the emotional connection to the landscape of barn structures. Simplicity and straight forward design are hallmark for many of the barns. For others the addition of yet another shed, or perhaps making a connection between two structures without giving much thought to the original intent, is all a building needs to remain practical in utility.

Wandering the Northern New York landscape one finds farm structures everywhere from Amish and Mennonite behemoths to the forgotten shed overgrown with escaped tiger lilies. Capturing them is something that goes to their statement of purpose - time of use - essence of crumbling into history - a record for a time.

Faces & Figures

Faces & Figures

I have been been studying the figure for over 30 years.  There are times in the last 15 years when I have asked a complete stranger if they would consider modeling for ongoing life sessions I run at Lake Placid Center for the Arts. I've been working on capturing some people in pastel who have engaged me in some way - from grandgirls to shopkeepers, to other cultures observed in travels.

Still Life

Still Life

When it is just too cold to paint outside the still life and memories of my garden become the focus of work.
